Our Story

We have proudly been in operation for more than 50 years, and throughout this time, we have achieved numerous milestones that have shaped our journey. Take a moment to explore the key achievements and significant moments that have defined our success over the decades.

1968

The Carver family start their first dedicated chemical transport business called Bioeve Ltd based in Dagenham docks.

1976

Bioeve Ltd evolves into Dagenham Steel Ltd and are awarded their first significant contract from Ford Motor Company for supply of chemicals into their operations in Dagenham.

1981

The Carver family purchase their first dedicated chemicals manufacturing plant at Titan Works in Essex. This allowed the business to further develop the services and products it could provide to clients.

1987

Purchased Newcastle Site

This year saw the purchase of a site in Hebburn, Newcastle, and providing Alum and Ferric Sulphate production, both important chemicals in the company’s potable water treatment portfolio.

1990

Saw the construction and commissioning of a state-of-the-art Zeolite plant at the Titan Works facility in Essex (max. production 120k MT), cementing the long-term partnership with Proctor & Gamble.

1991

Dagenham Steel Ltd acquire Hydral

Acquired Hydral Products, a renowned manufacturer in the industry, along with a strategically located site in Widnes, which allowed further expansion into the potable water market treatment.

1994

The company rebranded to Industrial Chemicals Limited (ICL) Ltd from Dagenham Steel Ltd

1996

Purchased West Thurrock site in Essex

ICL acquired the West Thurrock site located in Essex, a move that strategically positioned the company to enhance their operational capabilities in the region.

2000

ICL commissioned a new state of the art Amine Oxide production plant located in West Thurrock.

2009

West Thurrock Jetty made operational to receive bulk powder vessels

The West Thurrock Jetty was made fully operational to receive and accommodate bulk liquid vessels, enabling the efficient unloading and handling of large quantities of liquid cargo, and enhancing the infrastructure and capabilities of the port facilities in the region. In addition, construction was completed on the 5,000 MT of liquid storage.

2011
  • ICL secured the production contract with Tata Steel in the Llanwern site, expanding manufacturing capabilities and enhancing ICLs presence in the industry.

  • Acquisition of Selby production site, recommissioned Spray Drying Processes

  • Established packed chemical division at the Selby site.

2012

ICL commissioned Line 1 of the new Chlor Alkali plant located in West Thurrock, a pivotal achievement that not only marked a significant milestone in the company’s expansion but also represented a substantial investment in infrastructure and technology aimed at enhancing the capacity to meet the growing demands of the market.

2013

ICL established a second packed chemical division at the West Thurrock facility. Thereby further enhancing their reach to meet the evolving needs of customers in the packed chemical sector.

2014

ICL successfully commissioned Line 2 of Chlor Alkali plant in West Thurrock, providing additional security of supply to the UK Chlor Alkali market.

2016

ICL completed the acquisition of sites in Port Clarence and Scunthorpe.

2023

ICL commenced construction of a new Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) plant in West Thurrock, which is scheduled for completion in Q4 2024.

2024

ICL relocated from its existing headquarters Grays to Warley in Essex for the first time since 1981.
